- Order Fulfillment - Maximize Picking Efficiency | TREW
Top of Page Operator-to-goods Goods-to-operator HOME SOLUTIONS ORDER FULFILLMENT Order Fulfillment Order fulfillment is the process of finding and picking items to fulfill customer orders. This process tends to be the most labor-intensive operation in warehousing, and one of the most impactful on customer satisfaction and operational profitability. The fulfillment goal is always the same: get the right product on the right truck, at the right time, going to the right person, with the least amount of effort. Picking the right method and technologies for picking varies based on unit and cubic movement of inventory, seasonal order volumes, item affinities, and more. If you are moving pallets, cases, totes, our team has likely developed and implemented a solution that would benefit your operation. Selecting the right picking strategy is tricky, there are a lot of variables you have to consider about orders, inventory, items and the overall process in the building to achieve service levels that delight your customer. A range of technologies are available that can be applied, each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. We have experience creating discrete, batch, and batch consolidation picking solutions, applying the right fit of technology for labor efficiency, throughput and accuracy. Operator-to-Goods Operator-to-goods Operator-to-goods (OTG), or person-to-goods, is the picking process where a selector is directed via work instructions to a physical inventory location to make a pick. This is the most common form of operation and typically involves picking inventory from a pallet, case flow, or bin shelving. There are a range of picking processes that can be used to drive up efficiency and accuracy when using this method. Radio Frequency (RF) RF picking is a widely used technology where information is presented to selectors via a mobile device often worn on their wrists. The method increases accuracy and picking rates over paper-based picking and allows for a flexible implementation for order processing and types of inventory to be handled. This picking technology is often used for discrete order picking or combined with order consolidation strategies with mixed SKU tote batch picking. PickPad™ PickPad™ is a tablet-based solution that uses graphics to simplify and direct picking operations. The application uses a picking sled or cart carrying multiple order totes fulfilled by direct cluster or batch picking, an operation where a picker is directed to pick a quantity of inventory and distribute individual quantities into orders. The method can increase your order fulfillment productivity 40% over traditional RF or paper picking, while enabling picking accuracy approaching 100%. Pick-to-Light Pick-to-light technology is used to increase picking efficiency and accuracy, most commonly used in a less than full case, each picking environment. The method uses a light directed activity for selectors to find and pick inventory in their assigned work zones. The process can support discrete and batch order picking, often in pick-and-pass configurations. Our software allows increased capacities by enabling multiple workers within a zone, a helpful strategy to adjust to business volume fluctuations and peaks. Goods-to-Operator Goods-to-operator Goods-to-Operator (GTO), or goods-to-person, changes the picking process to remove unproductive walk time seen with operator-to-goods picking. With this method selectors are assigned a workstation and inventory is transported to them for order picking or consolidation. The inventory can be supplied via a batch pick or automated storage and retrieval system, and the workstations configured as put-walls, sortation inductions, or automated workstations. Put Wall Solutions Put wall solutions provide a flexible and scalable order consolidation for ecommerce and kitting operations. Inventory items are presented to an operator in donor totes, which were created by a batch picking process somewhere else in the building. After scanning an item, a put-to-light device indicates to the operator which order, put-wall cubby, the item is associated with. This method of order consolidation enables 450+ lines per hour throughput with +99% order accuracy. Good-to-Operator Workstations Goods-to-operator workstations are designed to minimize operator movement, bringing inventory items to the operator so they can pick and put them to orders with a minimal amount of walking. Workstations are configured with inventory donor totes and order totes in combinations that best fit the overall operation of the business. Configurations are typically 1:n (donor to order totes) with common configurations of 1:1, 1:4, 1:6, or more. The solution usually includes a single SKU pick process for the donor totes and a system that manages the flow of inventory to workstation for consolidation of the order. Picking performances ranges from 100 – 1000 orders per hour, while the operator’s pick rate tends to peak around 650 reaches / hour. Automated Put Wall Solutions Sure Sort® is a compact scalable small-item sorting system alternative to traditional put wall that can be applied in order consolidation, retail replenishment, inbound SKU, kiting, returns and parcel sortation applications. Robotic Aisle Picking Perfect Pick® is a robotic solution that combines tote storage, robotic shuttles, and goods-to-operator picking station into a single aisle design that can easily expanded as businesses grow and ideal for ecommerce, micro-fulfillment, retail, wholesale, and parts fulfillment. Robotic Goods-to-Operator Robotic goods-to-operator uses advanced autonomous mobile robots as an automated storage and retrieval subsystem that includes put-away, inventory storage, replenishment and order picking. The solution is very flexible in how it adapts to changing inventory profiles and order volume changes. The modular system architecture of this approach can scale to increase storage volume or fulfillment throughput independently by adding more storage racks or robots, as needed. The subsystem works by tracking inventory stored in racks, and bringing the racks required to fulfill an order to an operator station. The operator picks from racks as they are presented, and consolidates items required for an order. Solutions can be sized and configured to process a wide range of inventory and up to 48 orders at one operator pick stations. cASRS-to-Operator Infinity® is a robotic cASRS (cubic ASRS) high density storage system that brings together large and patented n-Deep tote storage with iBots that can access the entire storage array and each presentation station. The result is a configurable, flexible, resilient, fast and accurate picking system ideal for ecommerce and micro-fulfillment, store replenishment, parts/wholesale distribution and fulfillment. Robotic Shuttle Product Sortation (RSPS) RSPS is an automated store replenishment fulfillment & sortation alternative to put walls and item loop sortation that can increase order fulfillment by up to 4X, maximize shipping container cube utilization by up to 10%, and fit in a compact footprint. Goods-to-Sorter Goods-to-sorter induction strategies supersize the Put Wall order consolidation process achieving sort rates of up to 9,600 items per hour, or 13,300 items per hour when virtual sortation configurations are used. The solution presents inventory to an operator who inducts the items on a loop sorter. The loop sorter sorts the item into an order chute for consolidation. Multiple configurations can be implemented for induction stations and order chutes to match the volume of operations and inventory types.

- ASRS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System, AS/RS) | TREW
HOME SOLUTIONS STORAGE & RETRIEVAL Storage & Retrieval Sometimes working the cube is the best thing to do to increase storage utilization and improve picking efficiencies. Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) create dense inventory storage to maximize floor space by using the vertical space in a building. These systems can increase picking labor productivity by eliminating lost time walking and searching for inventory, and drive +99.99% accuracy rates by presenting the right inventory at the right time. The inventory stored in ASRS systems will vary by solution, often categorized into three types of solutions. This operation stores work in-progress or completed orders until they are needed. This type of solution can allow operations to work ahead of order commitment dates and even peaks and valleys in labor requirements. The orders stored in the buffer and retrieved and delivered at the time they are needed for shipping. BUFFERING This operation stores completed orders or work in process, retrieving containers in the order they are needed. A common application for completed orders is reverse truck stop loading. In this case, orders are flowed to shipping so that the truck is loaded with orders for its last stop first, and the first stop last. SEQUENCING This operation stores items, typically slow- to medium-movers, retrieving them to present them to an operator. This is typically the most complicated of the solutions, requiring a high level of coordination between overall operations and the ASRS system to optimize the solution so inventory and orders flow efficiently through a building. PICKING Successful automated storage system solutions include thinking and planning beyond the storage mechanisms. Timing and coordination of the subsystem with the overall order fulfillment processes and building flow, how items are inducted and stored, types of containers whether they be cases, totes or trays will be loaded and handled, among other things need to be considered. An ASRS solution can include one or more of the following technologies: Mobile Robotic Goods-to-Operator Robotic Goods-to-Operator uses autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to create a storage and retrieval picking subsystem that includes put-away, inventory storage, replenishment and order picking. The solution is very flexible in how it adapts to changing inventory profiles and order volumes. The modular system architecture of this approach can scale to increase storage volume or fulfillment throughput independently by adding more storage racks or robots, as needed. The subsystem works by tracking inventory stored in racks and bringing the racks required to fulfill an order to an operator station. The operator performs a pick from racks as they are presented, and consolidates items required for an order. High Density Case Cube Storage The i-collector is a three-dimensional dynamic storage system used as a buffer device for a wide range of standard totes and trays. The storage structure stores totes, a stack of totes or trays from one side, and then retrieves what is needed from the other. The design allows induction and takeaway through a manual process or automated flow. The design is based on proven technology, and its size can easily be adjusted to fit existing building. Applications include item picking, case picking, shipping buffers, and production buffers. Robotic Aisle Picking Perfect Pick® is a robotic solution that combines tote storage, robotic shuttles, and goods-to-operator picking station into a single aisle design that can easily expanded as businesses grow and ideal for ecommerce, micro-fulfillment, retail, wholesale, and parts fulfillment. cASRS-to-Operator Infinity® is a robotic cASRS (cubic ASRS) high density storage system that brings together large and patented n-Deep tote storage with iBots that can access the entire storage array and each presentation station. The result is a configurable, flexible, resilient, fast and accurate picking system ideal for ecommerce and micro-fulfillment, store replenishment, parts/wholesale distribution and fulfillment. Mini-Load System Shuttle System Mini-Load & Shuttle Systems Mini-load and shuttle systems are used in ambient, chilled or frozen environments to solve similar applications. Mini-load tends to fit with low to medium throughput solutions, while shuttles fit better with medium to high performance solutions. These systems create extremely high storage density and can handle a broad range of items; working well in in e-commerce, omnichannel, and wholesale fulfillment solutions. The main difference is how the system interacts with storage. Mini-load systems use a single load handler mounted on a moving mast to access all the locations in a storage aisle, while shuttle systems use more load handler vehicles that are assigned to specific levels of the storage structure. They have some variation in specifications like maximum product weights, aisle lengths, or storage depth, but the main tradeoff between the systems are operational throughput vs. investment. The design of ASRS subsystems need to consider performance of each of its elements like the pick and drop off flow, lift throughput, vehicle/load handler performance as well as type and spread of inventory. Oftentimes the most challenging aspects of ASRS systems are the overall solutions flow and external error prevention. Spending the time and effort to work through the solution flows and how subsystems interact is a critical part of implementing a successful solution.
- Conveyor Systems | TREW
HOME SOLUTIONS CONVEYOR SYSTEMS Conveyor Systems The best type of conveyance systems for operations are the ones they don’t have to think about. The conveyance does its job as the lifeblood of product movement in distribution and fulfillment facility, and they can be confident it will get products where they need to be. We know the right design for a manufacturing, distribution, or warehousing facility can save millions over the course of its operation. Conveyors are one of the technologies that can help. They are used to move products at rates and capacities that exceed what you would do with alternatives such as AMRs. Whether handling cases, totes, polybags, jiffys or parcels, each system should be designed with the right mix of transportation, accumulation, and intelligent handling conveyor to fit your business.
